Debra Roth Memorial Scholarship
Three years ago, an educational scholarship was established honoring the life of our sister, Debra Roth, through JVS SoCal. Debbie was a devoted daughter, mother, sister, aunt and friend who cherished her family. An accomplished attorney, she believed in the value of education. Her daughters, Alana and Lauren, attended Vassar and Oberlin respectively, and Alana is now in her third year of veterinary school. She and her husband Mat currently live in Colorado. Lauren is working in her career as a musician and filmmaker, currently living in the bay area. The other news this year is that Stephanie and Carlos, (Stephanie Lang) had a baby last month. She is named Billie Devorah, in remembrance of Debbie. We hope that she will have the strength and wisdom of her great aunt.
JVS SoCal, known throughout the community as JVS, is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization that annually helps nearly 30,000 people of all faiths and economic backgrounds. In partnership with private donors, the JVS Scholarship Program provides qualified Jewish students whose primary residence is in Los Angeles with need-based financial aid, in the belief that education represents the first step to career success. Since its inception in 1972, JVS has awarded more than 4,900 scholarships totaling over $9.2 million. Today’s recipients are pursuing both undergraduate and graduate studies at colleges, universities and vocational schools nationwide.
This past year, with the help of family and friends, we were able to raise $10,000, providing scholarships to four amazing young women in graduate school. In July we attended the Scholarship Awards Ceremony and were able to meet the recipients and to see many of the 243 students who received scholarships through this program.
We feel this scholarship is an apt and respectful way to remember our beloved Debbie. We hope you will join us by honoring Debbie’s memory with a gift to this program. No matter the size of your gift, we will appreciate your support. It will make a difference in the lives of deserving students.
