Program Description:

JVS SoCal provides valuable job preparation and job search skills to clients of L.A. County’s General Relief Opportunities for Work (GROW). The primary function and purpose of this position is to enable each participant to find employment, as well to be able to deliver motivational and educational workshops to economically disadvantaged participants in subject matters associated with gaining employment and becoming self-sufficient.

Job Description and Duties:

GROW Orientation – Job Coach will deliver GROW Orientation on a rotational basis at any designated DPSS location.

  • Orientation is 1-2 hours in length depending on location
  • Curriculum is designed and trained by LACOE, Los Angeles County of Education


Job Coach Responsibilities:

Will be traveling offsite to assigned DPSS office location. The Job Coach will cover the approval process flow, the GROW timeframe, information about participation, success stories, GROW philosophy, GROW approved programs and components, short term trainings, dealing with change, practice applications etc. Job Coach may be required to support other offices as requested.

GROW Job Readiness Training – Job Coach will deliver a 3-week Job Readiness Training to disadvantaged participants that may be long-term unemployed, recently released, homeless, have learning disabilities, suffer from Substance Abuse or Mental Health issues.

  • JRT, Job Readiness Training is 4 hours in length at all sites
  • Curriculum is designed by JVS SoCal and approved by DPSS


Job Coach Responsibilities:

The Job Coach will deliver a presentation at their assigned GROW site and any other site as directed when requested. Will conduct an individual employment plan and assessment for participants and lead a training class addressing the issues of job preparation and getting employment based on a curriculum developed for the program.  Must have sensitivity to an array of issues program participants are dealing with and must treat each participant with respect. The Job Coach will cover barriers to employment, discuss the do’s and don’ts of the workplace, challenges in the job market, resume preparation, assist with filling out applications, interview preparation, conducting job searches, networking with the business community. The Job Coach will also be assigned to collaborate with the DPSS Job Developers and other stakeholders for the purpose of obtaining information about job openings and matching uncovered job opportunities with clients’ skills and qualifications. The Job Coach will be responsible for identifying employment opportunities based on the needs of the participants in the program and contribute and update job resource center boards, provide employment opportunity updates on a regular basis and assist clients with the Internet based job search.  The Job Coach will take part in coordinating Job Fairs and Recruitments. Job Coaches will be assigned a task in the field developing and building relationships within the community. The Job Coach will be responsible for monitoring client’s attendance and progress.

Will be required to meet weekly and monthly deadlines and goals. Will be required to maintain a file system, put together participant folders and track progress, serve as a role model for clients, meet with program participants daily, contact employers and refer participants to jobs matched with their skills and aspirations, follow up with employers and collaborating agencies.

May perform administrative tasks, such as, issuing transportation, preparing reports and assist with language translation as needed (Spanish, Arabic, Armenian etc.).

Qualifications and Position Requirements:

Must have a track record of job placements or have the capacity of demonstrating this ability. Must know or will be willing to acquire/upgrade skills in developing resumes responding to the requirements of contemporary job markets.  Must have proficient computer skills, commitment

to quality, and a desire to inspire and assist unemployed and disadvantaged to obtain employment.  Must meet identified employment goals on a monthly basis.

Strong motivational and oral presentation skills, with experience in leading groups in a classroom setting and ability to de-escalate tense situations.  Should have concern for participants, and some knowledge of social settings; must be up-to-date in the contemporary trends of the American labor market.  Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; prioritize the workload and be a team player.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Must be able to operate standard office equipment. Professional office attire required.  Will work in business and classroom settings.


AA degree required, BA/BS Degree preferred.  Bi-lingual Spanish a must.  Must be computer proficient and able to learn new data bases if necessary.  Sales/marketing experience is highly desirable.
