Position Summary:

As Vice President, Marketing and Communications (VP MarCom), you will have a direct impact in the lives of those we serve and advance the mission of a forward-thinking, workforce development organization. Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the primary objectives of the VP MarCom are to increase outcomes that align with the overall mission and drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The VP MarCom is an integral member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for the development of JVS SoCal’s marketing and communication strategy. The VP MarCom oversees the annual development of a comprehensive marketing and communications plan, directly managing the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of marketing, communications, and public relations activities to promote, enhance, and protect the agency’s brand and reputation as a regional leader in workforce development. The VP MarCom manages all MarCom staff, and all external vendors who help oversee the creation and production of varied and integrated marketing and communications products and services including print and digital publications, website, social media, media, direct fundraising and events, public relations campaigns, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

MarCom Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement the annual strategic marketing and communications plan to broaden awareness of JVS SoCal’s brand identity and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create marketing and public relations strategies and work with JVS SoCal leadership to identify and leverage opportunities, enhancing meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences
  • Work with leadership and agency partners, providing guidance to implement strategic campaigns and accomplish marketing and fundraising goals
  • Serve as communications counselor/advisor to JVS SoCal leadership, and as a spokesperson and ambassador for the organization at large
  • Plan, organize and lead the Marketing and Communications Committee

MarCom Operations

  • Oversee development of all JVS SoCal communications including the annual report, agency decks, marketing collateral materials and newsletters, website, social media, etc., to ensure effective, high-quality agencywide and program-specific materials
  • Develop and co-produce creative and production-related aspects of agency fundraising events, including coordination with keynote speakers and honorees on messaging
  • Establish and measure Key Performance Indicators (KPI) related to agency, fundraising and program goals
  • Manage media and public forum opportunities, including preparation of talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed to ensure coverage surrounding JVS SoCal programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the marketing and communications function including project management, budgeting, planning, and staff development

Team Development/Management

  • Recruit and manage the marketing and communications team to support the development and execution of agency MarCom strategy and implementation of the agency strategic plan
  • Promote culture of high performance, collaboration, mentoring and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality, and positively impact and support agency initiatives
  • Manage project management platform to increase efficiency, streamline intake process for external and internal marketing requests and minimize rounds of revisions
  • Establish staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, and conduct performance appraisals


  • Passion for the mission and an understanding of the populations we serve
  • Proven ability to build positive, constructive, enduring cross-cultural relationships
  • 7 to 10+ years of experience in:
    • Team management
    • Planning, writing, editing and production of print, online, digital marketing and communications, and experience using CRM, data collection and analytics tools
    • Fundraising and/or producing and managing fundraising events preferred
  • Sound judgment, creative problem-solving and communication skills, with track record for translating strategic thinking into action, and making decisions in a changing environment
  • Proven ability to establish and achieve specific and measurable goals
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with clients, senior management, JVS SoCal Board of Directors and staff
  • Bachelor’s degree or above in journalism, communications, marketing and/or related field
