BankWork$™ Expanding into the San Fernando Valley

July 19, 2012 -- JVS Los Angeles  has announced that BankWork$™, its award-winning program which trains individuals for entry level careers as bank tellers in the banking industry, is expanding into the San Fernando Valley.

BankWork$™ is looking for candidates for its upcoming eight-week training session to be held in Van Nuys beginning Aug. 22 and concluding Oct. 17. The training program continues to operate in Los Angeles as well.

The program offers job training, job placement assistance and ongoing coaching for career advancement. Recruiters from such institutions as US Bank, Union Bank, Bank of America, Citibank, City National Bank and Wells Fargo attend each BankWork$™ graduation, conduct interviews and often hire graduates immediately.

The program was developed in 2006 by JVS in partnership with former Wells Fargo Chief Operating Officer Les Biller of The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation along with Bank of America, Citibank, City National Bank, Pacific Western Bank, US Bank, Union Bank, Wells Fargo, the State of California Employment Training Panel and United Way.  Additional partners include First Entertainment Credit Union, One West Bank, and Cathay Bank.

Since its inception, nearly 80% of graduates have secured employment with 75% still employed after six months. Of the more than 400 students who have successfully completed the class, JVS has trained individuals who are facing multiple barriers to employment such as poverty, English as a second language, single parent homes, the foster care system and recent emancipation. In 2011, L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa attended a BankWork$™ graduation and commended the program, calling it “an example of public private partnership at its best.”

With a version of the program operating in Seattle, Washington, BankWork$™ is now poised to increase its presence in Southern California with the Valley being the first step.

“We work with 11 financial partners who are looking to hire great employees and they pull from the BankWork$™ program,” says BankWork$™ Program Manager Lisa Meadows. “We have a lot of banks and credit unions who need employees in the Valley. So by having a class in the Valley, we hope to be able to accommodate the needs of our financial partners.”

Entry level tellers and personal bankers typically earn a starting salary of $20,000 to $35,000 as well as commissions.

BankWork$™ training is free, but applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, speak and write English, have basic computer skills and have no adult felony convictions.
