FAQ about the Relocation of JVS from West Hills to Sherman Oaks

June 23, 2012 FAQ about the Relocation of JVS from West Hills to Sherman Oaks

The relocation of Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) services from the Bernard Milken Jewish Community Campus in West Hills to Sherman Oaks has generated many questions and concerns. During this time of transition, JVS remains committed to serving our clients in the San Fernando Valley and to make them aware of all the services JVS offers both in the Valley and throughout the city. We have tried to address some of the most frequently raised questions and concerns. We encourage our clients to check our website www.jvsla.org for regular updates about job search and training resources, including workshops and Job Club meetings.

Q: Why is JVS closing its West Hills office?
A: The Jewish Federation which owned the Milken Center building has sold the property which will now be the campus for the New Community Jewish School. All Jewish service organizations within the building – including JVS – have been instructed to vacate the building by June 30.

Q: Does this mean that JVS is leaving the San Fernando Valley?
A: No. Services previously provided at the West Hills office are being transferred to our existing facility at 15130 Ventura Blvd. in Sherman Oaks.

Q: Does this include the Job Club? I like that program very much and have heard that it will be discontinued.
A: The job club will continue at the Sherman Oaks location. As there is no limit to the number of job clubs or workshops a person can join, clients are also encouraged to maximize available resources and take advantage of job clubs and workshops at JVS WorkSource Centers in Marina del Rey (13160 Mindanao Way, #200) and West Hollywood (5757 Wilshire Blvd., Promenade 3) as well as the programs in Sherman Oaks.

Q: I’m going to miss the convenience of “one-stop shopping” at West Hills and I’m concerned that the only way I will be benefit to get the full compliment of JVS programs will be to leave the Valley.
A: JVS recognizes that adapting to change can be difficult particularly during a time that is already stressful for the majority of our clients. We maintain that the most proactive way to confront this is to take advantage of as many JVS services as possible at as many of our locations as possible. Our clients who can not find conveniently located JVS-operated sources can also consulthttp://www.worksourcecalifornia.com/centers.

Q: When will the changes take place?
A: JVS’s last day operating in West Hills will be Thursday, June 28. The new services at Sherman Oaks will begin the week of July 16.

Q: Does this move mean that JVS as an organization is scaling back or cutting programs or services?
A: No. JVS will continue to respond creatively and proactively to the challenges of a difficult economic climate to ensure that we meet the needs of job seekers throughout the city. In addition to the new configuration of services at our Sherman Oaks office, JVS continues to operate full WorkSource centers in Marina del Rey (13160 Mindanao Way, #200) and West Hollywood (5757 Wilshire Blvd., Promenade 3) and to deliver numerous job training and mentoring programs.

Q: I very much enjoyed working with the staff at West Hills. Will these same people now be working out of the Sherman Oaks location as well?
A: Career counselor Giselle Hartman and job developer Tali Lerea will be based in the new office with Giselle also serving the community service and resource program SOVA through JVS’s partnership with Jewish Family Services. Career counselor Bobbi Yanke will continue to provide the highest quality of consulting services as she has done at the Milken Center. After many years of dedicated service, our long time office manager Shelley Lutter has decided to pursue opportunities outside JVS.

Q: If I have more questions, who should I call?
A: During this period of transition, please contact our communications department at (323) 761-8888, ext. 8904 or 8866.
