JVS HealthWorks™ Wins LABJ’s 2014 Healthcare Leadership Award

April 23, 2014 - JVS’ innovative HealthWorks™ training program has won the Educational and Institutional Award at the 4th Annual Los Angeles Business Journal’s Healthcare Leadership Awards. 

HealthWorks trains job seekers to be Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs), the first step in a career in the health care field. The majority of the trainees are economically disadvantaged and have multiple barriers to overcome as they strive to launch their careers. Past graduates have faced chronic poverty and even homelessness, have been raised in the foster care system, are refugees or immigrants or are struggling as single parents.

“Our agency tagline is: ‘Building better lives. One job at a time’ and the HealthWorks program is a perfect illustration of that mission,” said Brenda Corona, Interim HealthWorks Manager.

“HealthWorks is a program that directly addresses President Obama’s directive that America’s training programs must be revamped to help close the ‘skills gap’ experienced by job seekers,” added Claudia Finkel, JVS COO. “This program changes lives, and we are both delighted and honored that the Los Angeles Business Journal has recognized its impact.”

JVS carefully pre-screens all of the HealthWorks participants and those who are ultimately accepted into the training program undergo six weeks of comprehensive preparation combining classroom instruction and clinical work. The training is supplied by professional instructors from the American Red Cross.

Immediately following the program graduation ceremony, HealthWorks graduates participate in a private job fair with representatives from 10 to 12 skilled nursing facilities who interview them for open positions. Many of the new graduates are hired on the spot.

The program is offered to qualifying participants free of charge thanks to the generosity of our donors, including The Boeing Foundation, Bank of America, Adam Press, the State of California Employment Training Panel, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and the American Red Cross.

This is the third time JVS programs have been honored by the Los Angeles Business Journal. The agency’s Veterans First program earned the Project Collaboration Award at the LABJ’s Nonprofit and Corporate Citizenship Award in 2012. JVS BankWork$ won the identical award in 2013 for its stellar achievements in training job seekers for entry level positions in the banking industry.
