Continuing its tradition of recognizing corporate philanthropy, JVS will honor The Boeing Company – a long-time supporter of one of the agency’s signature training programs - with the Corporate Leadership Award at its 16th annual Strictly Business L.A. luncheon. The presentation takes place Wednesday, May 8 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

One might not immediately associate an organization famous for engineering and aviation with a training program that prepares people for a first-step entry into the health care industry. But in fact, the partnership between Boeing and JVS’ HealthWorks – which prepares individuals to be Certified Nurse Assistants (CNAs) - makes perfect sense.

“Boeing invests in programs like JVS’ HealthWorks that touch on a vital need in our society: effective job training,” said Kevin Ober, Community Investor for Health and Human Services for Boeing. “At Boeing we believe that the most effective way of meeting the needs of our communities is to address the root causes, and we look for transitional job training programs that show a history of putting people back to work, as that is the true measure of success. HealthWorksdoes just that.”

Boeing has supported JVS’ HealthWorks for the past three years. But JVS is only one among many beneficiaries of the company’s generosity. Of the $179 million that the company gave to help improve lives worldwide in 2012, the largest share - $66 million - was given to charitable grants spanning the areas of health and human services, the arts, the environment, civics and education.

“It’s not just being proficient in engineering,” says Ober. “It’s looking at working within teams and being able to find creative ideas that drive education, improve the environment, foster creativity through the arts, and help people survive and thrive on their own. We encourage strong, vibrant communities throughout the country and the world.”

“JVS is very proud to partner with Boeing, helping us provide innovative solutions to critical community needs,” said JVS CEO Vivian Seigel. “In these tough economic times, their support is vital to our efforts to affect systemic change and offer people hope and opportunity. They are ideal recipients for our 2013 Corporate Leadership Award.”

JVS expects to place 50 HealthWorks graduates in 2013, nearly doubling the number of 2012 placements. In the past year, thanks to the support of donors such as Boeing and other program supporters, JVS has expanded the program to areas throughout the city of Los Angeles including Canoga Park, Glendale and Torrance.

Ober, who has visited and observed HealthWorks students during their training and attended program graduations, emphasized the fact that there is a shortage of quality certified professionals throughout the healthcare industry.

“People are already living longer, so it’s absolutely critical to make sure that there are people to serve their needs,” he says. “Boeing has a high population of retirees, and with an aging workforce, we want to make sure that - alongside the greater good to the community- there are services available for our employees and their families as they age.”

Accepting the award on behalf of Boeing will be Diane Shapiro, director, Human Resources for the Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems (S&IS) division of Boeing Network and Space Systems (N&SS). Shapiro is responsible for the implementation of HR strategies, processes, policy and execution for S&IS and Spectrolab employees in Southern California, as well as those in El Segundo and Seal Beach, the host for N&SS California sites.

At Strictly Business L.A., JVS will also recognize donors Roz and Jack Zukerman with the Champion Award and present Inspiration Awards to JVS clients Larry Dubey, Danielle L. Vaughn and Laurence Trebaol.
