11-20-2012 – JVS’ Veterans First has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Carl & Roberta Deutsch Foundation Veteran's Employment Initiative.

The grant, earmarked for JVS’ Veterans First, will be used to hire a new case manager, add training services and additional support services. This marks the largest grant for Veterans First from a private foundation in the program’s history.

“This generous grant will allow us to add more staff so we can serve additional clients,” said Jessica Cheng, Progam Coordinator, JVS’ Veterans First. “We have experienced an increase in enrolled clients due to the fact that so many servicemen and women are returning from deployment overseas. In addition, these funds will be used to train more veterans, which is very expensive, especially in the green jobs sector.”

Since June of 2010, JVS’ Veterans First program has helped veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan by providing professional career coaching, assessments to help identify transferable skills and job placement assistance, including a Veterans Job Club. The Veterans First staff also provides referrals to maximize veterans’ benefits, services and training opportunities.

In June, Veterans First earned a Nonprofit Citizenship Award from theLos Angeles Business Journal (LABJ). Earlier in November, JVS’ Veterans First was selected as Veteran Service Provider of the Year by the West L.A. Employer Advisory Council and the Employment Development Department.
