03-05-2013 – JVS has successfully answered the call to put Los Angeles residents back to work in 2013.
JVS has been named the top earner in the 2013 JobRaising Challenge, a co-venture of CrowdRise, the Skoll Foundation and the Huffington Post. For six weeks, from Jan. 21 through March 3, JVS and more than 60 other nonprofits across the country competed to raise money for their programs. The $254,100 collected by JVS during that time edged out second place winner, New York-based Venture for America, by less than $1,000.
As the top earner, JVS will be awarded the $150,000 grand prize from the Skoll Foundation. During the course of the campaign, JVS also won a $5,000 mini-challenge by being the nonprofit that earned the most during the week of Jan. 28 to Feb. 4. Between prize money and dollars raised, JVS’ total for the six week period was $409,100.
Collectively, the 74 nonprofits participating in the JobRaising Challenge JobRaising Challenge brought in $1,219,116 million. Of this total, 80% came from donations of less than $100 from donors across the country. Of the 203 unique donors who contributed to JVS during the campaign, 173 gave $100 or less and 64 were at the minimum $10 level. Contributors included first-time donors and long-time supporters of the agency.
“What amazed us about the Challenge was the way it galvanized our donors at every level, who gave literally from $10 to $10,000. We are so grateful for their enthusiasm and generosity,” said JVS CEO Vivian Seigel, “and of course the real winners are the clients of every single JobRaising nonprofit that now has more resources today to make a difference in peoples’ lives.”
In addition to the prize money, by reaching performance thresholds, JVS earned a number of incentives bonuses including exposure on the front page of the Huffington Post, mentorship from the HuffPost’s Impact team and an invitation to the IgniteGood boot camp featuring experts and leaders in the social impact space held at HuffPost's as well as a reception with Arianna Huffington, chair, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group. During the campaign, entries from the JVS blog JVSWorks about several of the agency’s signature programs were featured and promoted on the Huffington Post.
“We had hundreds of blog posts and thousands of tweets, so beyond raising all this serious money, we raised awareness,” Huffington said during an interview with Seigel on HuffPost Live. “A lot more people in America know about JVS LA and all the other amazing nonprofits. Part of what we wanted to do was show that the media had the responsibility of putting the spotlight on good things happening not just on what is dysfunctional.”
“By tapping into the American barn-raising spirit, the Challenge not only raised more than a million dollars on top of the $250,000 donated by the Skoll Foundation to help create jobs, it proved that by keeping the spotlight on the ongoing jobs crisis, we can come together to start conversations, raise awareness, and improve lives,” Huffington continued.
Runners up Venture for America ($253,205 raised) and Baker Industries ($111,750 raised) from Philadelphia will receive $50,000 and $30,000, respectively. Additionally, every competing organization received a surprise $1,000 gift from the Skoll Foundation.
