JVS Wins Two Awards At Houston Conference

Each year, the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services (IAJVS), comprised of 28 agencies across the U.S. and sites in Canada, Argentina and Israel, honors exceptional programs and the dedicated staff members behind the scenes who work so hard to make a difference.

JVS’ Veterans First won the IAJVS Program Award, recognizing the innovation and tremendous results this program has achieved on behalf of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghantistan. Managed by veterans who understand the challenges implicit in this difficult transition, the program is characterized by its individualized approach to addressing the needs of each person. To date, the program has helped more than 170 veterans with comprehensive employment services, resources and referrals, providing vocational training and placement in high growth areas such as IT, healthcare and green industry. JVS also works closely with employers to educate them about the added value of hiring experienced veterans.

WoMentoring Program Manager Jamie Thompson won the IAJVS Ron Coun Award, which honors outstanding young professionals who demonstrate a deep commitment to the community. In 2010, Jamie took over the leadership of WoMentoring, which pairs women in career transition with an established professional woman as a mentor. Mention Jamie’s name to any of her participants and they will tell you how she changed their life. The same can be said for her management of JVS’ HealthWorks™ program, where she saw 70 clients successfully graduate as Certified Nurse Assistants. Most of Jamie’s work is behind the scenes, as it is with all the other wonderful staff members who dedicate time, energy and heart to help our clients achieve a better life.
